Abstract
Hypericum perforatum is a medicinal plant of immense therapeutic value. The present study aimed to discriminate an elite, chemically identified Himalayan accession of Hypericum (RRL-J-20-2)rich in hypericin (0.3%)and hyperforin (>3%) from other accessions with lesser hyperforin content. The accessions were collected from six different geofraphical locations in the western Himalaya in Jammu & Kashmir, India. The RAPD approach was used to assess the quantum of genetic variation among the accessions at genomic level. Three primers revealed the intra-species variation at molecular level. Specific results elucidate the usefulness of RAPD to make diversity analysis more purposeful for optimum genetic ameelioration, effective conservation and sustainable utilization of genotypic variability.
