Abstract

Somatic embryogenesis is a highly preferred method for in vitro multiplication of plants. It also forms an ideal experimental model for investigating the process of differentiation and for understanding the mechanism of totipotency in plants. The phenomenon of recurrent somatic embryogenesis makes these attractive explants for genetic transformation and production of transgenic plants. Somatic embryogenesis in monocots has also been reported to reset the internal calendar at zero; thereby, enabling the germinated plantlets to live their full life span. Moreover, there is an increasingly high depletion of natural stands of bamboos mainly due to its gregarious flowering habit and anthopogenic pressures. However, the plant has emerged as a crop of the future and has a huge potential in paper, wood and textile industry. In fact, bamboos are among the most popular groups of plants owing to their immense utility, phenotypic variability and adaptability. Therefore, there is an urgent need for devising methods for large scale propagation of bamboos particularly, because the conventional methods of propagation are inefficient and labour intensive. In this regard, IHBT has demonstrated somatic embryogenesis to be a promising strategy that has proven to be superior to multiple shoot formation from nodal explants. The process of somatic embryogenesis in different bamboos, its application as a popular technology for eco-reforestation and industry; for production of plants with improved resistance to stresses through transgenic technology and also for mid-term conservation under liquid paraffin overlay have been discussed in this chapter. Plants produced from somatic embryogenesis have also been used as a model to induce in vitro flowering consistently and for understanding this complex and difficult process in bamboos.
